The vision for Oklahoma Play Therapy Counseling Center came about as a two-part venture. The first being to fill a community need to offer a developmentally appropriate approach to reaching children with mental health concerns by using innovative approaches such as Play Therapy, Sandtray, Filial, Art and Music techniques. The second being that OKPT-CC strives to offer qualify and affordable trainings to those mental health professionals who may want to broaden their professional horizons by learning the newest approaches and techniques in helping children, teen, adult and families during therapy. In addition to working with clients, Connie worked as the Mental Health Consultant for NW Oklahoma Head Start Program. She also works as a therapist, an instructor, and mentor. One of her current projects includes working with OU Child Study Center and the YWCA of Enid on a research project to help families. She is also a Regional Representative for Oklahoma Association for Play Therapy in the Enid area, and a member of the Leadership Academy for the Association for Play Therapy National Organization.
Mrs. O’Brien’s love for children and families started back in her high school days as she tutored special needs children, and worked as a summer recreation leader in her community. Her interests then took her to different cultures across the globe as she lived and traveled with her husband and children during military service.
While concentrating on her undergraduate work in education she worked as a sign language interpreter. Connie is an educator in two states and has certifications in early childhood to eight grades, English as a Second language, Special Education, School Counselor, and Elementary Principal, and holds a Masters Degree in Education: Guidance and Counseling. She is a Licensed Professional Counselor, and the only Registered Play Therapist in Garfield and surrounding counties. She is also in the process of obtaining certification as a Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor.
Mrs. O’Brien specializes in working with children, families and relationship issues through play and building strong attachments.
